Piper Hancock didn’t have the finish she wanted at Saturday’s Class A State Cross Country Meet, but running the course a second time gives her plenty of experience for next year’s run.
The University Heights Academy freshman finished 134th Saturday in a time of 24:19.
As a freshman, she finished 110th in a time of 23:39 on a course that was in much better shape. Heavy rains Thursday night left parts of the course under water Friday and left a key stretch muddy, including the start.
Anna Rupp, the great-granddaughter of former University of Kentucky basketball coach Adolph Rupp, won the Class A race. The Lexington Christian freshman finished in 19:02.
While her time wasn’t where she wanted it, Hancock learned some strategy that she says will help her at next year’s race.
