Trigg County High School inducted their ninth athletic Hall of Fame class Saturday. Dual athlete Ted Sills was a part of the latest class.
Ted Sills is considered one of Trigg County High School’s first standout dual athlete. Sills attended school in Linton until 1939 when it consolidated into the Trigg County school system.
On the basketball court, Sills was the leading scorer of the 1939-40 team coached by Paul Perdue that went 18-6 and won the school’s first district title. A Trigg County team wouldn’t win 18 games again for 20 years. Sills scored 250 points, which was 36-percent of the team’s total points. That would equate to 28 points a game for a modern team that scored 80 points a game. He became the first Trigg County player to be named All-Region in 1940.
Sill was injured during the 1940-41 season but still managed to score 125 points, which was tied for second-most on the team. Trigg County still managed a 15-7 record.
He played halfback on Trigg County’s 1939 football and led the team in scoring that year. Sills was one of the top players on the 1940 football team that finished 6-2-1 and missed winning the Western Kentucky Conference title by one game. That Wildcat football team allowed just 25 points in nine games, which still stands as a school record today.
Following high school, Sills served his country in World War II with his military honors including the Purple Heart. He was a successful businessman and community leader in Dover, Tenn. for many years. He passed away in 2007 at the age of 84.
