It was a big day for the Marshall County golf team at the Hopkins County Central Invitational.
Jay Nimmo birdied the last hole to claim medalist honors by one shot, and the Marshals captured the team championship as well Saturday at Madisonville Country Club.
Nimmo, the defending state champion, carded a 3-under-par 68, good enough to edge Rocco Zakutney of Paducah St. Mary by one shot.
Jackson Hill of Madisonville-North Hopkins and Jakob Wellman of Owensboro Catholic tied for third, just two shots back after 1-under 70s.
Trigg County’s Hunter Reynolds and Greenwood’s Jacob Lang were next with 71s.
St. Mary was runner-up in the team standings, just three shots behind Marshall, 297-300. Greenwood had a 301 in the tight competition.
With Zakutney already posting his 69, Nimmo went to the par-5 18th hole tied with the St. Mary golfer at 2-under.
But Nimmo reached the green in two, then rolled his eagle attempt up close and tapped in for the birdie.
Saturday’s field included 105 golfers on the Madisonville course.
