COVID-19 concerns and protocol caused the state cross country meet to be run in three different waves based on team finish at the region meet. Instead of running head to head against the state’s best runners in one race, Watts ran his race from the second wave and was mostly by himself for the entire 3.1-mile race.
Running against his inner-clock, the Madisonville senior won the Class 3A race by less than a second over runners who ran in the first wave. That made Watts’ win even more impressive.
Watts says a strong mental approach while running mostly by himself helped carry him to the state title.
