One day after the KHSAA Board of Control voted to delay the start of the high school winter sports season until January 4, the KHSAA has announced that all winter sports practices will be halted until December 14.

In congruence with the Governor’s order issued later the same day, official practice for all indoor interscholastic winter sports shall cease on Friday, November 20 at 5 p.m. and is planned to resume on Monday, December 14. This cessation will apply to all indoor interscholastic sports at all school levels, including but not limited to basketball, bowling, competitive cheer, dance, indoor track and field, swimming, and wrestling,” the KHSAA said in a statement.

Thursday’s decision does not affect football, whose postseason is scheduled to begin this weekend.  At Wednesday’s Board of Control meeting, Commissioner Julian Tackett said any shutdown would also affect middle school sports.

The announcement comes one day after Gov. Andy Beshear announced that beginning Monday, all public and private high school and middle schools will switch to remote learning until Jan. 4.

The resumption of practice on Dec. 14 gives schools three weeks of practice before the start of basketball season in January.
