The Lyon County girls’ basketball team turned an unseasonably warm February night into a frigid affair, falling 44-29 at Union County. The loss snaps the Lady Lyons’ five-game winning streak, dropping them to 17-7 overall. Lyon County won the first meeting 44-33 in Eddyville on December 15. The Bravettes halt a two-game skid, improving to 8-16.
The Lady Lyons only managed 8 first-quarter points, the first of four single-digit scoring frames, while Union County scored 13, taking a 5-point lead into the second quarter. Both teams struggled to score in the second period, with Lyon outscoring the Bravettes 9-8 to cut the halftime lead to 21-17.
Junior power forward Allison Murphy led the Lady Lyons with 7 at the break, followed by senior shooting guard Sophie Bingham with 6. Sophomore guard Jocelyn Spaulding scored 9 to pace Union County.
The Bravettes barely reached double figures in the third quarter, but Lyon County’s cold night continued, and they were outscored 10-7 for a 31-24 lead going into the last eight minutes. The Lady Lyons put up their worst quarter of the game, scoring 5 points, with Union County adding 13 to win 44-29. The point total is Lyon County’s lowest since a 36-28 home loss to Crittenden County (10-12) on December 8.
Bingham led the Lady Lyons with 15, including 9 in the second half. Murphy scored 7, all in the first half, to go with 8 rebounds. Freshman forward Calista Collins finished with 4, freshman guard Kenttavia Matthews had 2, and senior forward Hannah Holloman scored a point. Union’s Spaulding led all scorers with 17.
